One
Night Stand
He did not belong indoors,
But I crouched on the gravel
sidewalk
And lifted him with the TV Guide—
And that tiny snail
Left a faint slime trail
Where I parked his mobile home
On a pack of Daddy’s Camel
Cigarettes.
That night in Egypt,
A pyramid and palm tree
Stood behind the dromedary,
From whose hump the slime flowed
Over the cellophane desert
To that undiscovered country
Beyond the edge of our lamp stand.
